FF XII has a different battle system than FF X. In order to use new equipments, skills, and magic, you're going to have to level up a sort of "chart". The same applies to raising HP, MP, and use of items. In FF XII, the game has a bit of a free-roam feel to it. Battles won't take you to a different screen, but will stay on map and activate a "battle mode". From there, it acts like a real-time battle (no taking turns). There's a lot more stuff, but I can't really explain it from there.
