Why are Open Source programs so counter-intuitive? Are they written by programmers FOR programmers?

I consider myself pretty tech savvy having been in the computer hardware and software business for over 20 years, but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to use most OS programs (manuals? we don't need no stinkin' manuals).
