What does Memorial Day mean to Americans?

While watching TV I have seen ads for "Memorial Day Sales" what on earth is this about. In Canada November 11 is Remembrance Day we observe it as a solemn and heartfelt day to remember our war vets. The US has been involved im many wars and lost many good young people and I just don't understand the lack of reverence that a "Memorial Day Sale" implies.
