Planning your next litter?

Mine will not be bred until June 2011. I have a potential young (3 yrs) stud in mind but if he doesn't pan out, I will be waiting until 2012. What are you looking to get from your next generation? I have fixed a point (find and hold) in my old type dachshund line. Now I am looking to replicate that in at least 2 females in my 2011 litter, if not then at least 2 in my 2012 litter. (not the same btch, but same line) Striving to keep a little leg under the keel, but quality old type dogs are hard to come by with any merit. I am starting to plan my 2011 litter. How far in advance do you start contemplating yours? I have a short (3 year) and long term (all future gens) goal in mind and have been working my dogs towards this goal for 15 years now. Just wondering how far in advance and how much thought that REAL breeders of QUALITY PUREBRED DOGS put in to their litters? My hubby thinks that I think about my progeny too long and wait forever for the right time & match...He wants the babies NOW! I say , UH, DUH! You can not rush perfection.
